STAY HERE
In 2020, I worked as an art volunteer in the Children's Hospital for 3 weeks. In the hospital, I was drawn by the children. These paintings let me see the happiness or sadness hidden in the hearts of these children. This experience reminded me of my childhood when I grew up alone and created this short film.
What inspires me
The theme is inspired by the experience of being an artistic volunteer in a children's ward in a hospital. They include children with blood diseases, sensory dysfunction, and mental disorders.
They are generally difficult to communicate with and are in a state of isolation from the outside world. Although they will passively receive information from the outside world, they rarely give feedback. They may even show resistance to the outside world or a state of indifferent numbness, and cannot normally integrate into the surrounding environment. As if separated from the surrounding by a glass.
In accordance with this kind of "prohibition" caused by congenital or acquired repression, and at the same time combined with some closed experiences and dreams of my childhood, I created this short film.
Concept
Michel Foucault mentioned in "Discipline and Punishment": "Punishment has successfully implanted its own effects into our imagination. It is no longer limited to our poor physical punishment. It has entered the level of consciousness. Prisons are everywhere.
I created the image of an adult sitting in an unstable children’s rocking chair. The isolation and depression of childhood will continue to accompany the entire growth process. In fact, he still can’t get rid of the identity he was given as a "child" even though he has already become an adult.
That is, The character representing discipline stood quietly in the darkness behind him.
People's cognition and behavior of the world begin to take shape in childhood.
I sometimes recall the silent children who have been hospitalized in the Children's Hospital for a long time, and think of their timid eyes when they see external things in a long-term closed environment.
The outer contour of the cone triangle represents the instability and conflict deep in the heart. The behavior of hitting the glass vertically downward expresses his inner desire to break through the enclosed environment, and the broken glass does not seem to be the beauty he longed for. In the struggle of conflicts and contradictions, they fell into a deeper level of closure.
The humanoid flying insects surrounding him represent his inner view of the noisy and blind surrounding crowd: like a moth.
They are constantly whispering like nightmares, making people irritable, but because of isolation and separation, they can't understand what they are saying.
Fade away
I think that kind of silent and isolated space is like a long dark night on an isolated island. People in the night are wrapped in water, everything around is distorted, and even the sound is just a vague echo.
Passively waiting for the hot sun to rise, it is as enthusiastic as the lively life around. And he was always passively accepted in his isolation and self. When the sun rose with a surreal red and everything around him merged with it, he was finally evaporated.
More attempts
In this project, I came into contact with more 3D technology, and I began to make more attempts in character processing. Accumulated experience for my later creation.
This is also the first time I tried to make a character model with ZBrush.
I divided the work progress into two parts to complete. So I only started to try it at the end of the work progress.
At this time, I started to learn to deal with texture, such as skin texture processing.
This was a great start. In later subjects, I used ZBrush to complete more character productions.
